Point your phone at it and ask: 5 everyday uses for Gemini Live's free camera mode
What it does for you: instead of typing out a long description of a confusing appliance panel, a plant, or a pile of mail, you point your phone's camera at it and ask out loud. Gemini answers by voice, and you can keep talking back and forth.
Google made camera and screen sharing in Gemini Live free for all Gemini app users on Android and iOS in May 2025 (9to5Google). You don't need a paid plan.
Turn it on (about 1 minute)
- Install or update the Gemini app (Android or iPhone) and sign in with a personal Google account. You need to be 13 or older (Google help).
- Tap the Live icon (the waveform) at the right end of the prompt bar.
- Tap Camera to share what your camera sees. Tap the switch button to flip between front and rear camera.
- Talk normally. Tap Camera again to stop sharing, or End to finish.
Good to know: the camera turns off if you leave the app or your screen locks, and Gemini Live isn't available in the web version (Google help).
5 things to try today
1. Decode an appliance or car dashboard. Point at the washer's dial or a warning light and say:
2. Dinner from the fridge. Open the fridge, slowly pan across the shelves, and say:
3. Sort the mail pile. Hold up each letter (cover account numbers with your thumb):
4. Make sense of a label. Point at a nutrition label, a care tag, or cleaning-product instructions:
5. Fix-it first look. Show a leaky tap or a wobbly shelf bracket:
Honest limits
- It can misread what it sees. Ask it to say what it's looking at before it answers, and double-check anything that matters.
- Don't show private info. Keep ID cards, account numbers, and other people's faces out of frame. Check your Gemini Apps Activity settings if you want to control what's saved.
- It's not a professional. Use it for a first look, not for medical, legal, electrical, or gas decisions.
Your 5-minute challenge: open Gemini Live, turn on the camera, and try idea #2 or #3 tonight.
