Does this sound like you?

  • Your kid uses ChatGPT for homework, and you’re not sure if it’s helping them learn or doing the work for them.
  • You want to help with math homework, but you don’t remember how to do it.
  • You don’t know what your child’s school allows, or what’s safe to type in.
  • You’ve wanted to learn Spanish, or finally understand something, but classes don’t fit your life.

You’re not behind. AI can be a patient tutor that asks questions and gives hints. It just has to be set up and asked the right way. This guide shows you how, step by step.

What’s inside

Day 1

Set up your own AI tutor

Turn on ChatGPT’s free study mode, send a first message that makes it teach instead of tell, and save tutor prompts for math, reading and writing, science or history, and new skills. Plus when custom instructions and Projects help.

Day 2

Math, step by step

Get the smallest helpful hint instead of the answer, have the AI find the first mistake in your work, and four quick ways to check the AI’s own math.

Day 3

Homework that teaches the skill

“What is this assignment trying to teach me?”, explain it like I’m 12, practice problems, quizzes from the teacher’s study guide, and help for rusty parents.

Day 4

For parents: rules & settings

Age rules for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, linking ChatGPT parental controls, study hours and quiet hours, what controls can’t do, finding your school’s real policy, and family house rules.

Day 5

Writing feedback in your own voice

Feedback instead of rewrites, grammar help that explains the rule, checking a draft against the rubric, and why “did AI write this?” isn’t reliable.

Day 6

A 30-day skill or language plan

A realistic goal, a 30-day plan, daily lessons, flashcards, quizzes, a simple spaced-review schedule, and speaking practice.

Day 7

Made-up facts & privacy

How to catch invented facts and sources, what never to share about a child, and the ChatGPT settings to check.

Extras

Checklists & cheat sheet

A “Before you trust it” checklist, a one-page tutor cheat sheet, a checklist for every day, and the official sources listed at the back.

Your first tutor message

Paste this at the start of a study session so the AI teaches instead of telling.

Please be my tutor. Who I am: [a 7th grader / a parent helping my 10-year-old / an adult beginner] Subject and topic: [math: fractions / biology: cells / Spanish: ordering food] My goal: [understand it well enough to do my homework myself / pass a quiz on Friday] What I already know: [I can add fractions but dividing confuses me] Deadline: [quiz on Friday / no rush] How to teach me: - Explain one small step at a time, in plain words, with one example. - Ask me one question after each step, and wait for my answer. - Give hints, not answers. Only show the full answer if I ask twice. - If I'm wrong, tell me kindly and help me find the mistake myself.

Ask for the smallest helpful hint

For math: one hint at a time, never the whole answer.

I'm stuck on this problem: [type the problem exactly] Here's what I've tried so far: [your steps, even if they're wrong] Don't solve it. Give me only the next small hint, then wait for me to try.

Feedback, not a rewrite

For writing: the AI points out what to fix, and you make the changes.

Here is something I wrote: [paste your writing] It's a [school essay / email / cover letter / story] for [audience]. Don't rewrite it and don't write any new sentences for me. Instead: 1) Tell me 2 things that work well. 2) List the 3 most important things to improve, and why. 3) Ask me questions where my meaning isn't clear. I'll make the changes myself.

Who it’s for

Parents and grandparents of kids 13 and up who use ChatGPT for school, and parents of younger kids who want to use AI together with them. Adults learning something new, like a language before a trip. Complete beginners: every step says exactly what to tap or type.

Who it’s not for

Anyone looking for a way to get homework done faster (this guide does the opposite), teachers looking for classroom policy, and children under 13 using ChatGPT on their own.

Why you can trust it

Every tip was checked against official help pages from OpenAI, Google and Anthropic in October 2026, plus a U.S. Department of Education research guide on study habits, and every source is listed at the back. We never invent school rules; we show you how to find your school’s real policy. We’re honest about limits: AI can be wrong, parental controls don’t stop cheating, and we don’t promise better grades. We’re independent, not paid by or affiliated with any AI company.

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t using AI for homework cheating?

It depends on how it’s used and on the teacher’s rules. This guide is about using AI the way you’d use a tutor: explaining, giving hints, asking questions and checking work, while the student does the thinking and the writing. It also shows you how to find out what your child’s school allows, so you can follow that first.

How old does my child need to be?

ChatGPT’s terms say users must be at least 13 (or older where a country requires it), and anyone under 18 needs a parent’s or guardian’s permission. For younger children, the guide suggests sitting together and using a parent’s account. It also explains Google’s Family Link option for Gemini.

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT?

No. Study mode, custom instructions and Projects are all on the free plan. Free plans have limits, like how many photos you can upload, and the guide explains what to do when you hit one.

Will this improve my child’s grades?

We can’t promise that, and we won’t. What the guide does is show you how to make AI help with learning: hints, practice, quizzes and feedback. The effort still has to come from the learner.

Can my teen just turn study mode off?

Yes. Study mode and study hours make tutoring the default for new chats, but they don’t block anything. That’s why Day 4 focuses on house rules and conversations, not just settings.

Can I see my teen’s chats with parental controls?

No. ChatGPT’s parental controls let you adjust settings, but parents can’t read their teen’s conversations. The guide explains what you can and can’t control.

Is it only for parents?

No. Days 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7 work just as well for an adult learning on their own, for example a language before a trip.

What exactly do I get?

A 44-page, large-print PDF with a 7-day path, 45 copy-paste prompts, labeled worked examples, a “Before you trust it” checklist, a one-page tutor cheat sheet, and a list of the official sources behind the tips. It’s a one-time purchase with an instant download.

Will it go out of date?

AI apps change often, so some buttons may move or get renamed. The steps were checked in October 2026, and the guide tells you what to look for if your screen looks different. Buyers get free updated editions.

Can I share it with my family?

Yes, it’s for your household. You’re also welcome to print a copy for a parent or grandparent.
