ChatGPT can build you a mini tool now: 5 free prompts
What it does for you: instead of a wall of text, ChatGPT can now answer with a small tool you can play with right in the chat: a bill splitter, a budget with sliders, a grocery checklist you tick off. Change a number and the answer updates, so you don't have to re-ask every time.
OpenAI calls this Intelligent UI. It launched with GPT-6 on October 7, 2026, and started reaching Free and Go users on October 8 (OpenAI release notes). Free and Go run a lighter model (GPT-6 Luna) than paid plans (GPT-6 Sol), but both support it (OpenAI Help).
Before you start (1 minute)
- Open ChatGPT on the web or in the updated phone app, and stay in the normal Chat tab. Intelligent UI isn't available in the Work tab or in Voice (OpenAI Help).
- Leave the reasoning setting on a normal level. The Pro reasoning option doesn't support it.
- Have your real numbers ready (rounded is fine). Leave out account numbers and anything you'd never put in a text.
5 mini tools to try today
1. Split a dinner bill fairly.
2. A monthly budget you can adjust.
3. A week of dinners plus a tick-off grocery list. (Pairs well with the free fridge dinner drill.)
4. Compare 3 options with what matters to you. Phone plans, used cars, daycare, laptops: anything with trade-offs.
5. See how long a savings goal or a debt payoff takes.
If you just get text back
ChatGPT decides on its own when a visual answer fits, and testers have noticed it doesn't always switch on (TechRadar). First, ask for it outright in the same chat:
Still plain text? Then:
- Refresh, or update your phone app, and make sure you're in the Chat tab, not Work or Voice.
- Still nothing? Try it on chatgpt.com in a browser. Reviewers report the older Mac and Windows desktop apps don't show it (TechRepublic).
Don't like the visuals? On the web, go to Personalization → Layout and Visuals → Simple to get mostly plain answers (OpenAI Help).
Honest limits
- A nice-looking tool can still have wrong numbers. Check one result by hand (a quick phone calculator is fine) before you trust it with money. TechRadar's reviewer found an estimated battery-life figure in their laptop comparison and said they'd still check the specs before buying.
- It doesn't carry over to a new chat. Some pieces, like checklists, keep their state when you refresh the same chat, but nothing carries across chats (OpenAI Help). If you'll need it again, keep that chat or copy the final numbers somewhere.
- It's a planning aid, not advice. For debt, taxes, or big purchases, use it to understand your options, then confirm with the lender, the store, or a pro.
- Privacy: rounded numbers work just as well as exact ones. Skip account numbers, full names, and addresses. For a one-off sensitive question, use Temporary Chat (OpenAI data controls).
- Free vs paid: Free and Go get the feature on the lighter GPT-6 Luna model; Plus and up get GPT-6 Sol. Your plan's normal message limits still apply. You don't need to pay to try every prompt above.
Your 5-minute challenge: next time you eat out with friends or family, run prompt #1 and check it against one person's share by hand.
