ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: which free AI for beginners?

What it does for you: "Which AI should I use?" is one of the most common questions beginners ask, and the honest answer is that all three big ones have a real free plan that's good enough for everyday life. This guide shows what each free plan includes (checked on the companies' own pages on October 23, 2026), a 10-minute test you can run yourself, and a simple way to choose. You don't need to pay for anything here.

The short answer

You don't have to marry one. Many people use two: one as their main app, and a second one to double-check important answers.

What each free plan includes

ChatGPT Free (by OpenAI, at chatgpt.com or the ChatGPT app): - Unlimited everyday text chats ("subject to abuse guardrails"), with limited uploads, picture-making, voice chats, deep research, and memory (ChatGPT pricing). - Study mode, which teaches you step by step, is on the free plan. See how to use AI as a tutor. - Ads: ads may appear below answers on the Free and Go plans. OpenAI says ads don't change the answers and your chats aren't shared with advertisers. You can turn off ad personalization in Settings → Ad Controls, and Temporary Chats don't show ads (OpenAI Help: Ads in ChatGPT). - Cheapest upgrade: Go ($8 a month), which still may show ads.

Gemini free (by Google, at gemini.google.com or the Gemini app): - Works with your Google account. Includes making and editing pictures, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas, Gems (saved helpers you set up once), and Gemini Notebook (Google's Gemini plans page). - Google doesn't publish exact free limits. Paid plans are described as multiples of the free limit: Google AI Plus ($4.99 a month) gives 2x, and Google AI Pro ($19.99) gives 4x. - Gemini Live can also use your phone's camera. See Gemini Live camera mode: 5 free everyday uses.

Claude Free (by Anthropic, at claude.ai or the Claude app): - Chat on web, desktop, and phone, with web search, voice mode, memory, file creation, and up to 5 Projects (Claude pricing). - The pricing page doesn't list making pictures, so if you want an image, use ChatGPT or Gemini. - Anthropic's plan page doesn't mention ads. - Free use runs on a meter that resets over time, and Anthropic doesn't publish a fixed message count. A long session can hit the limit, and then you wait.

The 10-minute test: ask all three the same question

The best way to choose is to try them on your real life, not on someone's ranking. Open all three (free accounts), paste the same prompt into each, and compare.

Test 1: an everyday task.

I'm new to AI. Help me plan simple dinners for [2 people] for the next 3 nights. We have [chicken, rice, eggs, frozen peas, and a bag of spinach]. Keep each recipe under 30 minutes and list anything I need to buy.

Test 2: explain something confusing.

Explain [what a "deductible" is on health insurance] like I'm 12. Then give me one real-life example with made-up numbers, and tell me one question I should ask my insurance company.

Test 3: write something for you.

Write a short, polite text to my [landlord] saying [the kitchen faucet has been dripping for a week] and asking when someone can look at it. Keep it friendly and under 60 words.

Then ask yourself three questions:

  1. Which answer was easiest to read?
  2. Which one sounded most like something I'd actually say?
  3. Which app was easiest to use on my phone or computer?

Whichever wins two of the three is your main app. That's it.

If an answer is weak in any of them, don't give up on the app yet. Tell it what to fix ("shorter," "simpler words," "you forgot the peas"). Our post on fix-up prompts when AI gives a weak answer has lines you can copy.
