AI gave you a weak answer? 6 follow-ups that usually fix it
What it does for you: when the first answer is vague, too long, or just wrong, you don't need a "perfect" new prompt. You stay in the same chat and say what to fix. OpenAI's own ChatGPT prompting guide calls this iterative refinement: review the reply, then adjust (OpenAI Help).
This works the same way in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar chat AIs. Free plans are enough.
Before you paste anything
- Open the same chat where you got the weak answer (don't start a new one yet).
- Pick one problem to fix first: too generic, wrong tone, too long, ignored your limits, or you can't tell what's verified.
- Paste one of the follow-ups below. Then check the rewrite yourself before you use it.
6 follow-ups to try
1. Use my details, not generic advice.
2. Sound like something I'd actually say.
3. Answer first, then keep it short.
4. Push back on my idea.
5. Re-check my hard limits.
6. Separate facts from guesses.
Then open those links yourself. A confident rewrite is still a draft.
Honest limits
- "Try again" is usually too vague. Name the one thing that failed: tone, length, missing constraint, or unverified claim.
- The AI can still invent details. Asking it to verify helps you spot gaps; it does not replace checking sources for money, health, legal, or safety decisions.
- Don't paste secrets. Skip passwords, full account numbers, ID details, and private work you wouldn't want reviewed. OpenAI advises not sharing sensitive information you wouldn't want used or reviewed (OpenAI privacy). Use Temporary Chat (or your tool's equivalent) for one-off sensitive questions when you can.
- Free vs paid: these follow-ups don't need a paid plan. Paid plans may unlock longer context, voice, or other tools; the habit of correcting in-thread still matters most for everyday use.
Your 5-minute challenge: take one weak reply sitting in your chat history, paste follow-up #1 or #3, and compare the rewrite to the original.
