Make a PDF or Google Doc with free Gemini (easy steps)

What it does for you: You tell Gemini what you need, like "a one-page letter to my landlord" or "a printable packing checklist," and it hands you a real file: a PDF, a Google Doc, a Google Sheet or even a short slide deck. Since October 29, 2026, you can also open that file right inside the chat, type your own fixes, or highlight a line and ask Gemini to change just that part. No copying, pasting and reformatting into Word (Google).

Google says it's available to all Gemini users, free accounts included, in every language Gemini supports (Google Workspace Updates).

Before you start: computer or phone?

So if you want a Google Doc or a spreadsheet, use a computer. If a PDF is fine, your phone works too.

You need to be signed in with a Google account (a regular Gmail account is fine).

Step 1: Ask for the file by name

The trick is simple: say the file type in your request. "Write a letter" gets you text in the chat. "Create a PDF of a letter" gets you a file (Google).

Create a one-page PDF letter to my landlord asking for the kitchen faucet to be fixed. It has been dripping for 2 weeks. Keep it polite and short. Leave blanks like [MY NAME], [ADDRESS] and [DATE] for me to fill in.

Gemini thinks for a moment, then shows the file as a preview in the chat.

Step 2: Open it and fix it yourself

  1. Click the file preview to expand it to full screen.
  2. Click into the text and type your changes, the same way you'd fix a typo in an email. Fill in the blanks here.
  3. Read every name, date, phone number and dollar amount. Gemini can make mistakes, and it's your name on the letter.

Step 3: Highlight a part and ask for a change

This is the new part that saves time. Instead of asking Gemini to redo the whole thing:

  1. Highlight the sentence or section you don't like.
  2. In the box, type what you want, for example:
Make this paragraph sound firmer but still friendly, and add that I can be home Tuesday or Thursday after 3pm.

Only that part changes. You can also highlight something and just ask a question about it, like "Is this too long?"

Step 4: Save it, print it, or send it

When it looks right, download it to your computer or phone, or save it to Google Drive. Google Docs, Sheets and slides can be opened straight in those apps; slides can also be downloaded as PowerPoint or PDF (Google Workspace Updates). Button names move around, so look for a download arrow or an "Open in" or "Export" option near the file.

5 more prompts to try

A printable checklist:

Create a PDF checklist I can print for getting the house ready for 8 Thanksgiving guests. Group it by "1 week before", "2 days before" and "the morning of". Big checkboxes, large easy-to-read text, one page.

A simple flyer:

Create a one-page PDF flyer for a yard sale. Saturday, [DATE], 8am to 1pm, at [ADDRESS]. Furniture, kids' clothes, tools. Cash only. Make the date and address big and easy to read from a distance.

A bills tracker (on a computer):

Create a Google Sheet to track my monthly bills. Columns: bill name, due day, usual amount, paid this month (yes/no), how I pay it. Add 10 empty rows and a total at the bottom. Don't fill in any amounts.

Clean up a handwritten recipe: take a photo of the recipe card, add it to the chat, then:

Turn this handwritten recipe into a clean one-page PDF recipe card. Keep the exact amounts and steps. If you can't read a word or number, put [CHECK] there instead of guessing.

Notes into a handout:

Here are my rough notes from a meeting. Create a one-page Google Doc summary with: what was decided, who does what, and the next date. Use plain words. Don't add anything I didn't write. [PASTE NOTES]

That "don't add anything" line matters. Without it, AI sometimes fills gaps with made-up details. If you want to practice turning messy notes into something clean first, try the free messy notes summary drill.
