Come up with a Halloween costume from what’s already in your closet

The problem: Halloween is a week away, store costumes cost $40 or more, and asking AI for “costume ideas” gets you famous characters that need a wig, a prop, or a body type you don’t have. Tell it what you actually own and it can build a costume around that.

Do this

  1. Spend 2 minutes listing what you have: plain clothes and their colors, old accessories (hats, scarves, glasses, belts), and craft stuff (cardboard, tape, markers, makeup).
  2. Fill in the brackets, paste the prompt, and paste your list at the bottom.
  3. Pick the idea you like, ask for the step-by-step for that one, and do the quick safety check before anyone wears it out.

Copy-paste

Help me make a Halloween costume from things I already own. Keep it plain and simple. Who it's for: [e.g. "me, an adult" or "my 9-year-old, who likes animals and hates itchy stuff"] Where it's going: [e.g. "trick-or-treating after dark" or "a work party"] Time and budget: [e.g. "2 hours on Saturday, $10 max"] Things I'd rather avoid: [e.g. "no face paint, no wig, nothing scary"] 1) Give me 5 costume ideas built mostly from my list below. For each, list exactly which of my items it uses. 2) Only use items on my list. If an idea needs something I don't have, mark it "need to get" and suggest a cheap or homemade swap. 3) For each idea, tell me how recognizable it is (will people get it?) and how hard it is (easy, medium, hard). 4) Skip anything that blocks vision, trips you up, or makes fun of a real culture or group. 5) End with a short safety check: being seen after dark, comfort in the weather, and skin testing any makeup. What I have: [PASTE YOUR LIST OF CLOTHES, ACCESSORIES, AND CRAFT SUPPLIES]

Done when: You’ve picked one costume, you know which of your own things it uses, you have a short list of anything to make or get (under your budget), and you’ve done the safety check.

Make it better: Pick your favorite and ask “Give me step-by-step instructions for this one, with a 10-minute version and a 1-hour version.” Then ask “How can I make this a group or family costume using the same kind of stuff?” or “Give me 3 one-liners to say when people ask what I am.”

Privacy and caveats: You don’t need a photo of yourself or your kids for this drill, and it’s best not to upload one. AI can suggest things that sound easy but aren’t, or that won’t hold up on a cold or rainy night, so try the costume on at home first. For kids, skip masks that block vision, keep hems off the ground, add reflective tape or a light for trick-or-treating, and patch-test face paint on a small spot of skin a day ahead (follow the label, and skip it on irritated skin). If AI calls something a “safe” or “easy” costume, you’re still the judge.
