Figure out a home fix from a photo (and know when to call a pro)
The problem: Something at home is broken: a dripping faucet, a door that won’t latch, a toilet that keeps running. You don’t know what the part is called, whether it’s a 10-minute fix, or if you need to pay someone.
Do this
- Take a clear photo of the problem in good light, plus one of any label or model number. Crop out mail, faces, and your house number.
- Open a chat AI that accepts photos, attach them, fill in the brackets, and paste the prompt.
- Do the simple checks first. Before any fix, shut off the water or power at the source, and stop if the AI says it’s a job for a pro.
Copy-paste
Done when: You know the likely cause, the one check you’ll try first, and whether this is a job for you or a pro.
Make it better: Reply “Write 3 sentences I can show the hardware store clerk, with the part I need.” Calling a pro anyway? Ask “What questions should I ask so I understand the quote and don’t get overcharged?”
Privacy and caveats: AI can misread a photo, so treat its answer as a starting point and check the manufacturer’s manual. Never do gas lines, your main electrical panel, or structural work based on an AI answer; call a licensed pro. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside. Renting? Check with your landlord before you fix anything.
