Check a repair quote before you say yes

The problem: A mechanic or contractor hands you a quote full of part names, labor hours and add-ons, and you have to say yes on the spot. A chat AI can explain each line in plain English, sort what sounds urgent from what can usually wait, and give you polite questions to ask. It cannot see your car or your house and it does not know local prices for sure, so you use it to ask better questions, not to accuse the shop.

Do this

  1. Get the quote in writing. Copy each line item and price, plus the make, model, year and mileage (or what is being fixed at home) and the problem you came in with.
  2. Fill in the brackets, paste the prompt, and read the line-by-line answer. Mark anything it calls optional, a common add-on, or worth a second look.
  3. Ask the shop the questions it gives you, calmly. For a big bill, get a second written quote before you agree to the optional items.

Copy-paste

Help me understand a repair quote before I agree to it. Explain it in plain English for a beginner. What is being repaired: [e.g. "2015 Honda Civic, 98,000 miles" or "water heater in my house"] The problem I came in with: [e.g. "grinding noise when I brake"] The quote, line by line with prices: [paste each line, e.g. "front brake pads and rotors $420, brake fluid flush $129, cabin air filter $65"] My area: [city or state, for a rough price idea] For each line: 1) Say what it is and why a shop might recommend it. 2) Label it "fixes my problem", "maintenance that can usually wait", or "worth asking about". 3) Say if the price looks low, normal or high as a rough range, and say clearly that you are not sure of local prices. Then give me 4 polite questions to ask the shop, and tell me which items to get a second quote on. Do not assume the shop is cheating me.

Done when: You know what every line on the quote means, which items fix your actual problem, and what to ask before you sign.

Make it better: Ask “Check my owner’s manual schedule: at [mileage], is this service actually due?” and paste the maintenance page if you have it. Then ask “Write a short, friendly text asking the shop to do only the repair for my problem today, and to hold the rest.”

Privacy and caveats: Leave out your name, address, phone number, license plate, VIN and card details; the AI does not need them. AI price ranges are rough guesses and can be wrong for your area or vehicle, and it cannot inspect anything, so a real safety issue like brakes, steering, tires, gas smells or sparking wires should be fixed or checked by a qualified person right away. Never pay a stranger who shows up offering a cheap repair.
